I remember around the time when the Berlin Wall was removed, signaling the end to an era, I read a small comment in the L.A. Times. Someone said: "that though there were many convergent forces that conspired to take down the Berlin Wall, never underestimate the power of rock n roll!" I loved that, and actually gave it to Bruce Springstein's producer who was staying at a resort that I worked at that time. Because I know that music can greatly influence culture, and it starts a groundswell from the bottom up.
For sure, the Viet Nam war protests was a good example of how music & culture influenced political will.
Cultural will influences political will. Look at how anti-aparteid sentiments influenced businesses around the world to boycott South Africa. It is a powerful thing, and it always starts with the intent of one or more individuals. And there is nothing like music to carry that intent, sounding the call for change, getting it into the emotional level where it motivates. Good luck not only to Mark, but to us all on this magnificient planet in peril.
